Chichen Itza, one the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a Mayan archeological site in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Located 74 miles from Merida and 2 hours from Cancun, it is considered as the capital of the ancient Maya empire and was an important ceremonial center.
